INTRODUCTION

PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION contains Pantoprazole which belongs to the group of medicines called Proton pump inhibitors. It is used to treat peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or reflux esophagitis and its associated symptoms such as acidity, heartburn, acid reflux and pain in swallowing.

Peptic ulcers are painful sores that develop on the linings of the stomach, esophagus or intestines. It causes severe stomach pain with sensation of flatulence, indigestion, vomiting and fatigue.

GERD is a chronic digestive disease in which the acid from the stomach frequently flows into the esophagus leading to irritation of lining of food pipe. Symptoms include heartburn, chest pain, nausea, sensation of lump in throat and stomach discomfort.

Reflux esophagitis can be defined as the inflammation of the food pipe accompanied with acid reflex. PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION can also be used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (tumors in pancreas causing the stomach to secrete more acid) and other acid related diseases of the gut.

During treatment with PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION your doctor will closely monitor your kidney functions, liver functions and blood magnesium levels to avoid the risk of unwanted side effects.

Before receiving PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you have any liver, kidney or heart problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have weak bones or any previous history of bleeding in the gut.

Consult your doctor before receiving PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The most common side effects of receiving PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION is pain and inflammation at the site of injection. Consult your doctor if this side effect bothers you.

HOW PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION WORKS

PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION is a proton pump inhibitor. It reduces gastric acid secretion by the blocking the actions of a protein membrane called H+K+Atpase (proton pump) across the stomach lining. As a result, it prevents the worsening of ulcers, heals the existing ulcers and esophageal lesions and provides relief from the unpleasant symptoms of GI tract (such as acidity, heartburn and acid reflux).

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse into the vein (intravenously). Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION

COMMON

  • Benign polyps in the stomach
  • Injection site reactions (pain and inflammation)

UNCOMMON

  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness
  • Anxiety, sleeplessness
  • Breast enlargement in both men and in women
  • Feeling weak
  • Fragile bones (risk of bone fracture)

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects after receiving PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION:

  • Severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the lips, face or body and difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
  • Signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark urine and tiredness)
  • Severe skin reactions (such as redness, blistering, peeling of skin and bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals with fever)
  • Signs of kidney problem (such as lower back pain, painful urination)
  • Signs of low magnesium levels in blood (such as tiredness, abnormal muscle movements, dizziness, confusion, disorientation, irregular heartbeat)
  • Skin rashes on sun exposed areas
  • Sudden weight loss, looking pale and weak (anemia)
  • Signs of bleeding in the gut (such as bloody vomits/stools)
  • Chest pain
  • Severe, persistent diarrhea
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat, difficulty in breathing, feeling faint
  • Fits
  • Uncontrollable body movements (including eye and tongue), twisted neck and abnormal body posture

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Injection site reactions:

Place an ice pack on the affected area. Do not move the injection site often. Consult your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

Nausea or vomiting:

Stick to simple meals and avoid oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if nausea worsens.

Headache:  

Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

Dizziness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

PREGNANCY

BREASTFEEDING

PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION may pass through breast milk. Therefore, it should be used in breastfeeding women only if it is considered necessary by the physician. Consult your doctor for advice.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION does not affect your ability in driving or handling heavy tools or machines. However, do not drive or handle heavy tools or machines if your ability is affected by PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consumption of alcohol while receiving PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION, as it could aggravate your existing condition.

KIDNEY

PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

LIVER

PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

ALLERGY

Do not receive PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION if you are allergic to Pantoprazole.

OTHERS

  • Have osteoporosis

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you are receiving any of the following medicines such as:

  • Medicines used to treat fungal infections (such as ketoconazole, itraconazole and Posaconazole)
  • Erlotinib (a medicine used to treat cancer)
  • Warfarin and phenprocoumon (medicines used for blood thinning)
  • Methotrexate (a medicine used to treat cancer and autoimmune diseases)
  • Atazanavir (a medicine used to treat HIV infection)
  • Fluvoxamine (a medicine used to treat depression)
  • Rifampicin (a medicine used to treat tuberculosis)
  • St. John’s wort (an herbal medicine used to treat depression)
  • Overdosage:
  • PANTOSMALL 40 MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you experience any unusual symptoms.
