What is this used for:

  • Allergic rhinitis

When to not take this medicine:

  • Hypersensitivity/Known Allergy to Montelukast or levocetirizine or ingredients present along with it.
  • End-stage kidney disease
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Hemodialysis
  • Acute Asthma
  • Mental or Neuropsychiatric disorders
  • Urinary retention

How should I take the medicine?

Take this medicine with an adequate amount of water as directed by the physician. Do not take this medicine in small or larger amounts than recommended.

How this medicine works:

Montelukast works by blocking the action of secretory substances in the body that cause the symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis. Levocetirizine is an antihistamine and works by blocking histamine secreted in the body that causes the symptoms of allergy like itchiness, sneezing, rash, etc.

  • Abdominal pain(Less common)
  • Dry Mouth (Less common)
  • Pharyngitis(Less common)
  • Diarrhea (Less common)
  • Vomiting (Less common)
  • Irregular heartbeat (Rare)

Not categorized- Use of this medicine is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant unless absolutely necessary. Inform your doctor about the use of this medicine. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.

Renal dose adjustments:

Care must be taken for individuals with kidney disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative on the basis of creatinine clearance values.

Hepatic dose adjustments:

Care must be taken for individuals with liver disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative. 

Drug interactions:

  • Butabarbital- Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. When these medicines are taken or used together may reduce the serum levels of montelukast in blood and may decrease the effectiveness. It is recommended to inform the doctor on priority. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

  • Aspirin – Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. When these medicines are taken or used together may increase the occurrence of bleeding disorders.If you experience any signs and symptoms like red spots on the skin, easy bruising, then inform the doctor on priority. It is recommended to inform the doctor on priority. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

  • Carbamazepine- Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. When these medicines are taken or used together may reduce the serum levels of montelukast in blood and may decrease the effectiveness. It is recommended to inform the doctor on priority. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

  • Ritonavir- Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. When these medicines are taken or used together may increase the serum levels of levocetirizine and may cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, etc. It is recommended to inform the doctor on priority. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

Alcohol interactions:

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended while taking this medicine as it may cause interactions and lead to serious adverse effects and may worsen the health condition.

Food interactions:

Expert Advice:

  • The use of this medicine is not recommended for individuals diagnosed with chronic alcoholism or other diseases like gastrointestinal blockage, asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.
  • This medicine can be taken with or without food. However, it is recommended to follow the advice of the doctor.
  • The use of this medicine is contraindicated for individuals using antidepressant medication.
  • Activities like driving, operating machinery, etc., should be avoided as this drug may affect your alertness.

Missed dose instructions:

Take this medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost the for your next dose skip the dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Seek emergency treatment or contact your physician in case if you experience any unusual signs and symptoms during the treatment with this medicine.

Storage Instructions:

Store the medicine in a cool and dry place. Keep the medicine away from the reach of the children
